Will LED Light Bulbs Help You Fall Asleep?

If you fly to Asia on the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner, you might find it a wee bit easier to fall asleep on the way.
Although LED light bulbs have largely been touted by advocates as a way to curb energy consumption, many manufacturers have begun to discover that the 搊ther?attributes of these chips條ong lifetimes, low maintenance requirements, precise control and communications capabilities?could actually emerge as the strongest selling points.
A properly engineered LED light bulbs, in other words, could help you sleep.揧ou can reset circadian rhythms and evoke behavioral responses,?said Dr. George Brainard, a professor of neurology at the Jefferson Medical College at ThomasJefferson University, who added that health could be one of the common packaging and branding qualities, like output and watts, in a decade or two.
The first consumer 揵iological specific lights?could even start to hit the market in about two years, says Fred Maxik, one of the founders of Lighting Science Group, which specializes in LED light bulbs.
Lighting Science has made LED light bulbs for testing circadian rhythm impacts for both NASA and aircraft engineers. (See photo.) The company currently works with Google on a bulb that dims and brightens as you approach with an Android phone. Bulbs tuned to kill germs朥V light can be deadly to microbes杕ight appear four to five years beyond sleepy bulbs.
The potential to exploit LED light bulbs as sleeping aids derives largely from the fact that LEDs can be programmed to emit light at precise wavelengths, colors and tones. LED light bulbs, after all, are digital semiconductors. Traditional light bulbs produce light by heating exotic gases or pieces of metal inside of sealed tubes: they are the last vestige of the 132-year old vacuum tube era. Controlling them requires filters and the tribal wisdom of lighting designers.
揂n LED is a light source, but it is an infinitely controllable source,?said Zach Gentry, an executive at Enlighted, which combines LED light bulbs with temperature, light and occupancy sensors for monitoring energy consumption and physical activity in office buildings.
Throughout most of human history, people began their workday when the sun crossed the horizon and went to bed after night descended.

LEDs throw new light on energy saving at Air NZ

Air New Zealand has halved the Amount of Energy required to Light Key areas of its Auckland Engineering Base following Installation of a new LED Lighting Product, Ecofluro. Ecofluro T8 LED Tubes have been used to replace more than 2,100 fluorescent bulbs at the site, a move that has not only reduced Air New Zealand's energy usage, but also lowered its running costs. "Fluorescent bulbs, which are used by most New Zealand businesses, contribute to around 40% of the average office power bill so by replacing them with LED a business can literally halve this cost, "says Paul Stoddart of Business Lighting Solutions, which manufactures Ecofluro.

A LED that can match a 60W incandescent?

With incandescent bulbs disappearing entirely from shops from September next year, the race is on to Find Suitable replacements. Energy-saving bulbs - or Compact fluorescents (CFLs) - already do that job, but remain unpopular in some quarters and are not the most Efficient alternative technology. The real hopes lie with light-emitting diodes (LEDs), according to industry, environmentalists, and politicians. With the global lighting market predicted to be worth € 110bn by 2020, companies such as Phillips, GE, and Osram are fighting to be first with the breakthrough in the LED field.

Panasonic’s New LED Lamps to Instead of HF Fluorescent Lamps
Reported by

http://www.bgocled.com/

Recently, Panasonic Electric Works has released an Led lighting device to replace high-output high-frequency (HF) fluorescent lamps.

According to the company, the new led lighting device has a brightness equivalent to or higher than those of HF fluorescent lamps. The CRI is 84. A high-efficiency model that is expected to embedded in a ceiling to replace two HF32-type fluorescent lamps has a designed luminous flux of 5,880lm, a rated power consumption of 60.6W on average and an efficiency of 108.3lm/W, which are approximately 14% higher, 31% lower and 27% higher, respectively, than those of two HF fluorescent lamps.
The company will release 68 models including straight tube models, rectangular-shaped models, etc that emit white, daylight-color, warm white, incandescent-color lights.

The new Lighting device is equipped with an Led module using a ceramic substrate that has a high resistance to deterioration, a high heat radiation performance and a high reflectivity. As a result, its lumen maintenance factor is 95% after 40,000 hours of use.

The white and warm white models start to sell on Dec 1, 2011,and the other models are to be sold on Feb 1, 2012.
