First the town of Culpeper switched to LED (light-emitting diode) technology for traffic signals. Now the town is experimenting with LED streetlights, which last longer, burn brighter and are extremely energy efficient. Two LED streetlights have been erected at North Main and Piedmont streets, with a third to be installed later at South Main and Elm streets. “There are a lot of utilities and localities looking into the LEDs,” said Mike Stover, director of the Light and Power Department. “LEDs lower energy usage by as much as 50 percent.”
