Monday--Auto talk:Colour of light emitted

The colour of light emitted by vehicle lights is largely standardised by longstanding convention, first codified in the 1949 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic[1] and later specified in the 1968 United Nations Convention on Road Traffic.[2] Generally, but with some regional exceptions, lamps facing rearward must emit red light, lamps facing sideward and all turn signals must emit amber light, lamps facing frontward must emit white or selective yellow light, and no other colours are permitted except on emergency vehicles.

Forward illumination

Forward illumination is provided by high- ("main", "full", "driving") and low- ("dip", "dipped", "passing") beam headlamps, which may be augmented by auxiliary fog lamps, driving lamps, and/or cornering lamps.

Dipped beam (low beam, passing beam, meeting beam)

Dipped-beam (also called low, passing, or meeting beam) headlamps provide a light distribution to give adequate forward and lateral illumination without blinding other road users with excessive glare. This beam is specified for use whenever other vehicles are present ahead. The international ECE Regulations for headlamps specify a beam with a sharp, asymmetric cutoff preventing significant amounts of light from being cast into the eyes of drivers of preceding or oncoming cars.[3][4] Control of glare is less strict in the North American Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) beam standard contained in FMVSS / CMVSS 108.[5]

Main beam (high beam, driving beam, full beam)

Main-beam (also called high, driving, or full beam) headlamps provide an intense, centre-weighted distribution of light with no particular control of glare. Therefore, they are only suitable for use when alone on the road, as the glare they produce will dazzle other drivers. International ECE Regulations permit higher-intensity high-beam headlamps than are allowed under North American regulations[6]

Auxiliary lamps

Driving lamps

"Driving lamp" is a term deriving from the early days of nighttime driving, when it was relatively rare to encounter an opposing vehicle. Only on those occasions when opposing drivers passed each other would the dipped or "passing" beam be used. The full beam was therefore known as the "driving beam", and this terminology is still found in international ECE Regulations, which do not distinguish between a vehicle's primary (mandatory) and auxiliary (optional) upper/driving beam lamps.[3][4][7] The "driving beam" term has been supplanted in North American regulations by the functionally descriptive term "auxiliary high-beam lamp".[8] They are most notably fitted on rallying cars, and are occasionally fitted to production vehicles derived from or imitating such cars. They are common in countries with large stretches of unlit roads, or in regions such as the Nordic countries or Canada[citation needed] where the period of daylight is short during winter. Many countries regulate the installation and use of driving lamps. For example, in Russia each vehicle may have no more than three pairs of lights including the original-equipment items, and in Paraguay auxiliary driving lamps must be off and covered with opaque material when the vehicle is circulating in urban areas.[9]

Rallye and off-road lamps

Vehicles used in rallying, off-roading, or at very high speeds often have extra lamps to broaden and extend the field of illumination in front of the vehicle. On off-road vehicles in particular, these additional lamps are sometimes mounted along with forward-facing lights on a bar above the roof, which protects them from road hazards and raises the beams allowing for a greater projection of light forward.

Front fog lamps

Front fog lamps provide a wide, bar-shaped beam of light with a sharp cutoff at the top, and are generally aimed and mounted low.[10][11][12]They may be either white or selective yellow. They are intended for use at low speed to increase the illumination directed towards the road surface and verges in conditions of poor visibility due to rain, fog, dust or snow. As such, they are often most effectively used in place of dipped-beam headlamps, reducing the glareback from fog or falling snow, although the legality varies by jurisdiction of using front fog lamps without low beam headlamps.
Use of the front fog lamps when visibility is not seriously reduced is often prohibited (for example in the United Kingdom), as they can cause increased glare to other drivers, particularly in wet pavement conditions, as well as harming the driver's own vision due to excessive foreground illumination.[13]
The respective purposes of front fog lamps and driving lamps are often confused, due in part to the misconception that fog lamps are necessarily selective yellow, while any auxiliary lamp that makes white light is a driving lamp. Automakers and aftermarket parts and accessories suppliers frequently refer interchangeably to "fog lamps" and "driving lamps" (or "fog/driving lamps"). In most countries, weather conditions rarely necessitate the use of fog lamps, and there is no legal requirement for them, so their primary purpose is frequently cosmetic. They are often available as optional extras or only on higher trim levels of many cars. Studies have shown that in North America more people inappropriately use their fog lamps in dry weather than use them properly in poor weather.[14]

Cornering lamps

On some models, white "cornering lamps" provide extra lateral illumination in the direction of an intended turn or lane change. These are actuated in conjunction with the turn signals, though they burn steadily, and they may also be wired to illuminate when the vehicle is shifted into reverse gear,[15] as is done on many Saabs and Corvettes. North American technical standards contain provisions for front cornering lamps[16] as well as for rear cornering lamps.[17] Cornering lamps have traditionally been prohibited under international ECE Regulations, though provisions have recently been made to allow them as long as they are only operable when the vehicle is travelling at less than 40 kilometres per hour (about 25 mph).[15][18]

Spot lights

Police cars, emergency vehicles, and those competing in road rallies are sometimes equipped with an auxiliary lamp, sometimes called an alley light, in a swivel-mounted housing attached to one or both a-pillars, directable by a handle protruding through the pillar into the vehicle. Until the mid-1940s, these spot lamps could be found as standard equipment on expensive cars.Until the mid-1960s, they were commonly offered by automakers as model-specific accessory items. Spot lamps are used to illuminate signs, house numbers, and people. Spot lights can also be had in versions designed to mount through the vehicle's roof. In some countries, for example in Russia, spot lights are allowed only on emergency vehicles or for off-road driving.

LED lights point shoppers in the right direction

Looking for an item in a large department store or mall can be like searching for a needle in a haystack, but that could change thanks to a hybrid location-identification system that uses radio frequency transmitters and overhead LED lights, suggested by a team of researchers from Penn State and Hallym University in South Korea.
LED lights are becoming the norm, said Mohsen Kavehrad, W. L. Weiss Chair Professor of Electrical Engineering and director of the Center for Information and Communications Technology Research at Penn State. The same lights that brighten a room can also provide locational information.
To locate an item in a mall, the system would not need to transfer large amounts of data. Kavehrad and his team envision large stores or malls with overhead LED light fixtures, each assigned with a location code. At the entrance, a computer that is accessible via keyboard or even telephone would contain a database of all the items available. Shortly after a query, the location or locations of the desired item would appear.

Switch to Sell First 'eco' Liquid-cooled LED Light Bulbs

Californian-based firm Switch has launched new liquid-cooled LED light bulbs which is first 'eco' light that's as bright as a normal 100w bulb.
The bulb was showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, and was set to retail for £24 when it eventually goes on sale.

According to Brett Sharenow, strategy officer for the company, the big thing about this bulb is it uses 80 per cent less energy than an incandescent.

The LED light bulbs are presently available only for the US 120-volt system, but the company plans to release versions of the bulbs for use in the UK and Europe by the end of 2012.

Sharenow thinks the bulbs will be a particular hit in the UK, where energy costs are as much as double those in the US. For a commercial application, the payback is about six months. To commercial users, it is a no-brainer.

Energy-saving lights tested

First the town of Culpeper switched to LED (light-emitting diode) technology for traffic signals. Now the town is experimenting with LED streetlights, which last longer, burn brighter and are extremely energy efficient. Two LED streetlights have been erected at North Main and Piedmont streets, with a third to be installed later at South Main and Elm streets. “There are a lot of utilities and localities looking into the LEDs,” said Mike Stover, director of the Light and Power Department. “LEDs lower energy usage by as much as 50 percent.”

Guangdong Actively Provokes LED Industry

As Led is one of the three main strategic sectors backed by government support, Guangdong province continues to solidify its position as China’s major hub for LEDs.

Based on 2011 estimates, the province has doubled its scale in terms of production value. In the first half alone, it breached the $12.6 billion mark. So far, the number of related enterprises there is close to 3,000 with an aggregate workforce exceeding 550,000.

Furthermore, the designated department is identifying the key technological problems in major LED categories. The first step to take into consideration is to focus on the downstream packaging section, which will lead up to the application market. These front and back ends in the industry chain are seen as the breakthroughs for the entire line. The Xiaolan town in the city of Zhongshan has show the example of being at the center of LED packaging in China. It plays host to more than 200 related enterprises as opposed three years ago when only a few were operating in the area. The town was recognized as the “green”Lighting showcase of Guangdong with the installation of over 4,000 diode-based street lamps and 80,000-plus landscape lighting.

In the meanwhile, other cities are also pouring in LED investment. Currently, more than $6.3 billion is being channelled to the LED bases in Huizhou, Dongguan and Jiangmen, including the project of Nanhai Xurui, Huizhou Kerui and BYD. The over-$2.5 billion led chip undertaking of the first company, Zhoulei, Zhongjing and Guangzhou Zengcheng is another.

Under the government’s support, LED industry in Guangdong will develop better and better.

100-watt LED Light Bulb That Uses Only 12 Watts of Power?

Anomax says it invented a 100-watt LED bulb that uses only 12W of energy. Compared to today's most energy efficient 100-watt bulb (CFL Compact Florescent Light at 23 watts) Anomax's bulb is 48% more efficient.
Anomax's  energy efficient lights pair their patent pending IPCHS substrate technology (a low cost metal-core board with circuits directly plated on alumina) with off-the-shelf LED diodes. Anomax names this break-through technology LMR for Light Made Right.
H.A. Chan, Director of Anomax, states, "Today's LED bulbs' bottleneck is their extremely low heat transfer (3W/mK) board that overheats the LED diodes and greatly lowers the light output. That's why brighter than 60-watt LED bulbs exist only in R&D labs and are very expensive to produce. The very high thermal transfer (30 W/mK) of IPCHS enables efficient power-to-light conversion, improving energy use by almost 50%."
In comparison, 90W of a 100-watt incandescent bulb is wasted producing heat. A 100-watt CFL uses 23W but contains harmful mercury in fragile glass-tubes that breaks and inevitably introduces mercury into our food chain. A 100-watt LMR bulb uses only 12W, HALF that of a CFL and as an LED based light, LMR is totally Green. At other light-output levels, LMR bulbs consistently use only half the energy of CFLs.

Congress bans 100-watt light bulbs

Congress has turned the lights out on the 100-watt screw-in bulb, but so far, the news has barely caused a flicker of interest on the island, according to Jamestown Hardware’s owner, Scott Sherman.
In fact, the local store still has stock on the shelves and will be allowed to continue selling the 100-watt incandescent bulbs until supplies run out. “We still carry them,” he said. Manufacturers, however, have stopped producing the high-watt incandescent lights, said Lindsey Geisler, spokesperson for the Department of Energy. The government ban on 100-watt light bulbs went into effect Jan. 1, she said. The reason is that the incandescent light bulbs generate too much heat and waste energy. The incandescent bulbs are being phased out beginning with the 100-watt lights, but manufacturing will eventually also halt on the 75-, 60- and 40-watt bulbs.

Solar-powered LED lighting installed on bridge

When the Astoria-Megler Bridge was built in 1966, the navigational lighting was tied into the electrical grid. After 45 years, it had begun to deteriorate. The Oregon Department of Transportation received a grant from the Federal Highway Administration to install a solar-powered navigational lighting system on the bridge in the summer of 2011 as part of a $355,000 pilot project. The new lights are bright, high-efficiency LEDs.

LED Light Tricks

Light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, are bright, compact, use little energy, create little heat, have a long life, and are all the rage. LEDs seem to be the ideal lighting product. They're perfect for a wide range of theatrical effects as well. You are about to learn three great tricks using LEDs and simple materials to create sky illusions.

Creating an LED Star Curtain

  • This effect creates the illusion of a starlit night sky. You will need a large black cloth, a hot glue gun, a knitting needle, and several strings of white LED Christmas lights. I recommend Commando Cloth, which is inexpensive and can be found at many theatrical supply houses. It's durable, fire-retardant and very nonreflective.
    1) Begin by sewing the fabric into the dimensions you require. Be sure to calculate for and sew in the pipe pockets for hanging.
    2) Poke a hole in the fabric from the back side with the knitting needle and push the first LED lamp into the hole. Secure it there firmly with hot glue. Don't worry about covering some of the lamp; variations in light intensity will make the "stars" appear more real. Try to keep the glue off the front of the fabric.
    3) Repeat this in a random pattern until you run out of LEDs on the first string. You don't have to stick every LED through the fabric if you wish to have a greater distance between stars and clusters.
    4) Use a another string and mix them in with the lights of the first string. Remember, LED strings on different circuits can be dimmed to different brightnesses. You can even make them twinkle if you like.
I recommend at lease one string of 100 LEDs for every 100 square feet of fabric, depending on how dense you like your star field.

Make an LED Shooting Star

  • This effect creates the illusion of a shooting star across a star field.
    1) Pick up a cheap, single LED flashlight from your local hardware or variety store (you might even find one at a dollar store). Open the housing and take the thing carefully apart. Discard the housing and lens. Retain the batteries, LED, and switch system. You may use whatever battery comes with the product, but I recommend button batteries over AAs. You will also need some black electrical tape and a paper clip.
    2) Rewire the pieces together to create a circuit that can be opened and closed by the switch--batteries, switch, LED, and back to the battery. Secure the terminal wires to the batteries with tape, secure the batteries together with the tape, and then secure the switch to one side of the battery pack and the LED to the other side.
    3) Bend the paper clip into an S and attach the large end to the device, leaving a hook. Make sure that all parts of the device (except the paper clip hook and the switch) are covered in black tape.
To shoot your shooting star, you will need to stretch some fishing line from a high point off stage on one side of the proscenium to a low point off stage on the other side. Hook the device over the line on the high side, switch it on, and let her go. Capture and switch off the device once it crosses the stage.

Using LED PARs to Light a Scrim Cyclorama

  • This effect will create the illusion that your night sky (star curtain) is fading into dawn (or in reverse to dusk).
    Terms:
LED PARs lights are a type of theatrical fixture that creates a soft flood. They are made up of numerous LEDs housed in an array. For this effect we will want RGB fixtures that contain red, green and blue LEDs so that the colors--each on their own circuit/channel--can be mixed to achieve a desired hue.
A scrim is a fabric drape made up of an airy, gauze-like fabric. When lit exclusively from the front, it appears opaque. When you light objects behind the scrim while it is lit from the front, the scrim appears translucent. When you remove the front lighting, the scrim becomes almost invisible. Scrim comes in white, black, and blue.
    Here's what you do:
    1) Hang your scrim drape about 1 ft. or so in front of your star curtain. Black will be the most invisible, but it will not pick up the the colored lighting well. White and blue will be nearly invisible while you keep front lighting off. Minimize lighting spill to keep the scrim invisible.
    2) Hang a number of LED PARs in a way that will evenly light the front of the scrim. I suggest that you light from the bottom (hiding the fixtures behind a ground row because the sun rises and sets from the horizon). You can also light from the top down using blue-gelled conventional fixtures. Maybe even add in some cloud gobos, which are metal pieces attached to lights to project a pattern.
    3) Use your lighting controller to fade through the desired hues--purple to magenta to blue or orange to red, to purple--to create the sunrise/sunset illusion while you fade the stars in or out.

Monday--Auto talk:The Application of LED Car Lights

LED car lights are the latest trend in the illumination of cars both as functional lights and décor ones. Functional LED car lights are installed by factories more frequently and in a growing range. The first application of factory-installed LED car lights happened in 2008 in a Lexus LS 600h / LS 600h L model, and their application has been growing ever since. An even wider range of after-market lights is also available for individuals who wish to switch for LED car lighting. These light bulbs are available in a wide range of colours sizes and fittings. Nearly all existing car lights can be replaced with LED equivalents, and several guidelines can help you change the bulbs yourself. Some DIY skill will be necessary though, to access the lights within the car.
The advantages of LED car lights are numerous. LED car lights have the advantage of immediate start-up, and very long lifespan. Good quality LED lights can have a lifespan up to 50 000 hours, so you might change your car sooner than you change the lights in it again. Their design is often more flexible, since they are available with various beam angles. The durability is also impressive of the LEDs compared to filaments that can easily break, these lights are resistant to shake and indoor LED lights are often brighter than factory-installed lights, and let's not forget about the fact that LED lights are the greenest solution of lighting available on the market.
What you have to pay attention to when you apply after-market LED car lights is that LEDs are sensitive to heat, and operation in a high temperature can shorten their lifespan. Therefore it is not advised to use them next to a headlight for instance, which emits a large amount of heat. LED replacements have the advantage of very low power consumption - one of the reasons why they are worth using. However, plenty of new car constructions include an indicator for bulbs, and due to the low resistance of the LED bulbs, it might show that the bulb has gone. To fix this problem and get a valid indication you need to use a resistor kit included in the system.
Besides the commonly used parking lamps, tail and stop lights, turn signals, daytime running lamps, and festoon lights, LEDs are often used for decorating cars both inside and outside the car. Additional lighting can be added within the car with 12V LED solutions, as most LEDs can be operated with batteries. A common and diverse form of decoration is the LED strip light available in the full spectrum of colours. RGB LED strip lights allow a whole new range of decorating your car, changing and varying its colour as often as you wish. LED strips - available in fully waterproof version - allowing external decoration of the car on any side, strips fixed openly on the body of the car. Here is your chance to create a unique look for your car and save some power on the way.
