German Company Brings ‘Virtual Sky’ with LED lighting into Indoor Office


The Stuttgart-based Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO replicate the feeling of spaciousness and freedom what we experience outdoors into indoors: a luminous ceiling that extends across the entire room simulates lighting conditions which resemble those produced by passing clouds – conveying the impression that you are sitting outdoors.

The innovative luminous ceiling, which was developed by the Fraunhofer researchers and their partners at LEiDs GmbH, consists of 50cm by 50cm tiles.

According to Dr. Matthias Bues, head of department at the IAO, “Each tile comprises an LED board with 288 LEDs. The board is mounted on the ceiling. A diffuser film in matt white is attached approximately 30cm beneath the LEDs and ensures that the individual points of light are not perceived as such. This diffuser film creates homogenous lighting that illuminates the room throughout.”

The researchers used a combination of red, blue, green and white LEDs to produce the full light spectrum. This combination makes it possible to generate more than 16 million hues.

To simulate natural lighting conditions on a cloudy day is the core of the goal. To achieve this goal, the researchers carefully examined natural light to find out how – and how quickly – the light spectrum changes when clouds move across the sky.

“The LEDs allow us to simulate these dynamic changes in lighting in a way that is not directly obvious to the naked eye. Otherwise the lighting might distract people from their work. But it does need to fluctuate enough to promote concentration and heighten alertness,” said Bues.
Currently, the results of a preliminary study indicate that users find this dynamic lighting to be pleasant.

LED Makeover on the River Walk in San Antonio

San Antonio city officials have planned to renovate the old 85,000 incandescent bulbs on the River Walk with nearly 2 million LED lights.
Now, nearly 200 trees have their trunks wrapped in thousands of lights. After the city originally planned to keep the trees wrapped year-round, the San Antonio Conservation Society has prompted a move.However, a city forester assured them they wouldn't stay on forever.
Nancy Hamner Avellar, president of the society, said "The trees will be unwrapped every three years so there should be no problems with stunting their growth."
While the society doesn't work in concert with the city in regards to the lighting project, it has brought up other concerns including the stringing of lights along the bridges over the river, many of which are historic.
The lights strung along the bridges this year are temporary and rest on plastic tracks. The holiday lights will stay lit through Sunday, January 8. The city's downtown operations director Paula Stallcup said the city has had discussions with Paseo del Rio and River Walk businesses to possibly allow them to light up some of the remaining unlit trees along the river between the historic section and La Villita.

Lighting with Luminaries


Saving energy has become one of the prime concerns of residential and commercial building owners. Apart from reducing the electricity bills, various practices to save energy contribute in maintaining environmental balance. Various energy efficient equipments play a significant role in this direction. 
The fact that lighting accounts for 25-30% of the residential and up to 50% of commercial electricity consumptions encourages people to use CFL lamps, luminaries and other energy efficient equipments. LED Lighting Regulation in 2012


The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 put many changes into motion for the lighting industry. The most significant change is a required 25 percent increase in the energy efficiency of light bulbs. Since manufacturers are currently unable to increase incandescent bulb efficiency by such a large percentage, the end result is essentially the phased elimination of this type of bulb.

In January of 2012, the manufacture of 100-watt incandescent light bulbs that fail to meet the new efficiency standard will be prohibited by law. In January of 2013, the scope of the law will increase to include 75-watt bulbs, and in January of 2014, 60-watt and 40-watt incandescent bulbs also become subject to the regulation.

The use of compact fluorescent bulbs and LED bulbs will increase dramatically as incandescent technology is phased out. Both of these technologies are more energy efficient than incandescent lighting, but fluorescent bulbs contain mercury vapor. This could result in disposal issues as the bulbs become more widely used.

LED lights operate on solid state semiconductor technology. They do not contain mercury, but the thin semiconductor films do make use of toxic metals such as gallium, arsenic, indium, and germanium. These materials are present in minute quantities, and LEDs have a much greater life expectancy than typical fluorescent bulbs. LED bulbs designed to replace incandescent lights contain multiple LEDs in a bulb-like housing that will screw into any standard E27 socket. The LED industry has been aware of the impending change for some time, and LED lighting technology has been improved to produce brighter and more natural light each year. An offshoot of the development has been an increased use of LED technology in the automotive industry. LEDs in braking lights have become commonplace, and LED headlamps can also be purchased.

Additional LED vehicle lighting is available as aftermarket enhancement. Valve stem spinner lights and various ground effect lights have become popular aftermarket modifications, and many states have implemented statutes to limit their use. Some states argue that these modifications are distracting and lead to accidents. Others are concerned that, depending upon the color and placement of the LEDs, the lights could cause conventional vehicles to be confused with public safety vehicles at night.

Most states have laws prohibiting the use of flashing, spinning, or stroboscopic lighting. Some states prohibit the use of specific colors of lights, such as blue, whether they flash or are lit continuously. All states generally prohibit the use of red lights anywhere except the rear of the vehicle.

These statutes have become contentious issues for motorcycle enthusiasts. Motorcyclists argue that LED accent lighting enhances their visibility to other motorists and reduces the risk of collisions. Incandescent light bulb phaseout begins


The nation's light bulbs begin facing new efficiency and labeling standards starting Jan. 1, but don't expect old-fashioned incandescents to suddenly disappear from store shelves. The congressionally mandated efficiency standards gradually phase out Thomas Edison's 131-year-old creation in favor of other light bulbs that use at least 25% less energy. The first to go, beginning Sunday, is the traditional 100-watt, followed in January 2013 with the 75-watt version and in January 2014 with the 40-watt and 60-watt bulbs.
